  • 2-3/4" Forstner Bit

  • 3-1/2" Hole Saw

  • 3/8" drill bit

  • 1"x4"x4" Walnut or Cedar Stock

  • 3/8" hardwood dowel

  • 3/4" hardwood dowel

  • 2" single strength glass

  • 3" single strength glass or 3" slate

Making a good sounding pot call, really isn't that hard. All you need is a few tools and a little time. Be sure not to go cheap on your wood. Good quality wood is very important to the sound of the call.

First you need to be sure your drill press is big enough to turn the bits. Safety is always important so make sure you have your safety glasses.

Start by squaring your piece of walnut or cedar stock to 1" thick by 4" square (Figure 1). Find the center of your wood and place a mark there. This is very important, because you will work off the center during the entire process of making the call. If you have true square stock the easiest way to find the center is to simply draw a line from corner to corner. If your stack is square where the lines intersect is the center of the wood (Figure 2).

Take a 3" forstner bit (Figure 3) and line it up with your center and drill down to a depth of 1/8-3/16" deep (Figure 4).

Next take your 2-3/4" forstner bit and line it again with the center and drill down to a depth of 3/4" (Figure 5).

Next take the 3-1/2" hole saw, again line it with your center and drill completely through the wood (Figure 6). You now have your rough pot.
